Jornada Springs, New Mexico - a Tale of the Old West: Part 39

Jornada Springs, New Mexico - a Tale of the Old West: Part 39

Song:

I said no. You can't play a Ninja. This is an Old West game, and they didn't have Ninjas. But the year is 1869. And there are historical records indicating there were ninjas. In fucking Japan,

Song:

Hello, and welcome. And here we are again at our fabulous eighth retreat about to play tales of the Old West, the ongoing tale of Jimmy Harleston, Marion Freeman, and Nathaniel Hawcock in the town of Leonardo Springs in New Mexico 1873. I think we're still in 1873 just.

Dave (GM):

We're into 1873.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

According to the introduction you sent us, think winter is flowered into spring.

Dave (GM):

It might be 1874.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Might be 1874.

Dave (GM):

Cool. Do you quickly want to introduce yourselves guys and then we'll get to the summary of what happened last time.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Hi I'm Matthew and I play Marion Freeman, the largest owner of the Freeman Halston outfit. Not largest in

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

No, imagine you're reading all the supplies.

Dave (GM):

Well, signs of ego.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I have the most capital invested in it.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I'm Tony playing Jimmy Halston, co owner of the Freeman Halston Ranch and trying to live up to the memory of my dead brother.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I'm Andrew, and I'm playing on Nathaniel Hawcock, our part time rancher with these two, and also Sheriff, I seem to remember. Am I Sheriff?

Dave (GM):

You are Sheriff.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Still Sheriff.

Dave (GM):

You are Sheriff of Eunada Springs.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Eagles. Haven't been sacked yet. Amazing.

Dave (GM):

No, haven't been sacked yet. Haven't been shot yet. Well, not as Sheriff.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I'm sure it's any amount of time.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yes, indeed.

Dave (GM):

It's past nine now, so we're maybe at ten past. Cool, thank you for that. Tony, if you've got the... I have, it's a of

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

an epic. So last time on Thursday or West, after the trial of the McGinns in Lincoln, Grain Giddish,

Dave (GM):

named McGinn. Grain

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Giddish, named McGinn, was badly shaken by the news that Domene McGinn was not her natural father, and a man from Las Vegas, a former outlaw and now rancher called Norton Torrance, in fact was her father. So she's withdrawn into herself a bit, recovering from the shock of the gunfight at the McGinhouse, the trial, and now the shocking news. Winter's taking hold and the vermin are eating their way through the town store of food. Garland Rayburn required us to go to a nearby town to acquire food supplies for the rest of the winter. We chose Las Cruces to the south, and there we met up with Captain Bristow of the U.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

S. Cavalry, who was investigating reports that the two lost secret children had been spotted with an Apache band. We also met with the Mexican leader of Las Cruces, the Alcalde Abelos. He's an old friend of Augustine Paquito,

Dave (GM):

and

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

we made a good impression. We were promised the food we needed at favorable rate if we would join the hunt for the lost children. So we agreed and rode out to try and track the Apaches down. We soon came across a group of their warriors, and although we tried to talk to them, gunplain shooed, and we were all wounded in the fight, but killed two of the warriors

Dave (GM):

and

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

captured one while the others fled. Our captive was called Kuruk. We interrogated him and he revealed that one of the dead warriors was his brother, so we tried to convince him to help free the children, as the cavalry were coming and would slaughter all of them unless the children were returned unharmed. He eventually agreed to help but escaped when Freeman fell asleep on watch. But the impression we made on him

Dave (GM):

was clear by that, as he

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

left us alive instead of killing us in our sleep. So with the cavalry not far behind, we found the main Apache camp. Freeman entered the settlement with Kirk's brother to beg for the lives of the children, who are there, who were there, and seemingly in good health. Outside the camp, cavalry scout Jimmy Schmidt caught up with us, and was ready to call in the rest to attack the camp. But Freeman eventually convinced the Apaches to let the children go, and warned them to flee before the cavalry found them, but it was too late.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Native scouts reported the cavalry's arrival, and found the scout Jimmy Schmidt hiding in the trees. He resisted them and was killed in scout, the scout being dropped at treatment's feet. A gift or a warning? I don't know. So we fled the camp with the children as the Apache rushed to escape.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

We headed off the cavalry under Captain Bristow and handed the children over. By offering to let Bristow take all the credit for saving the children, he agreed to let the Apache go as they hadn't harmed the children. So we turned about and headed off for Las Cruces, leaving Billy Schmidt to find the scout body of his brother Jimmy lying in the dirt. So Bristol and Avalos were as good as they were and gave us the supplies, a wagon full of supplies and provisions, which we returned to Jornada Springs with, which shows a welcome sight in the town for sure. Then winter's now turning into spring, and things are looking up for the town until

Dave (GM):

a couple of people start to cough.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Alright, I'm leaving. Mexico, here I come.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

We're in lockdown now.

Dave (GM):

No such thing. Some maps here that might be relevant or useful. Inarda Springs.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Have got some Exclusion Zone.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Maps in this pile as well.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So these are newer exciting maps.

Dave (GM):

And that's New Mexico City.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

This is very new.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh, very posh.

Dave (GM):

So that wider environments one, just bear in mind that the Dugdale Ranch was the Dean Ranch in the game because that's been put together for... The campaign? Yeah. Alright.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Why has the Dean Ranch changed since Dovetown?

Dave (GM):

I don't know. I just did. You

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

just did it? Yeah. Don't wanna give your boy too much.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

We had a Dean Ranch instead of Morgan Ranch as well. The

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

McGinn Ranch is the Morgan Ranch. McGinn? Evil McGinn's.

Dave (GM):

Evil Morgan. The comedy comedy ranch.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Alright. So nobody owns the river. Right okay cool cool cool.

Dave (GM):

So yeah the river is basically the boundary between the two. Yeah. Yeah. Oh yeah that's the critical hit table. I just need that for later.

Dave (GM):

The one that Stefan did.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah. Very small writing.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. Like you said, getting that down to...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

8.5.

Dave (GM):

Might be too small. For young people it'll be alright.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah, we're not young people. Nobody who plays role playing games is a young person. That's

Dave (GM):

not a totally true name. So there's quite a lot of people. I with these glasses on I can't even really... I can just about read that, but I have to take my glasses off to read it at that range. Let me have a look.

Dave (GM):

I can read it at that range better.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Now it can be twice the size and across two pages actually. It can just be... I can read it all though. Flesh wound.

Dave (GM):

You got the right glasses on?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah, I have bifocals.

Dave (GM):

Yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

But very focal. I still do sometimes again.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, yeah, noticed, yeah, I'm the same. Yeah. Let's go as

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

well flick that onto the gem

Dave (GM):

screen. But are you saying that we'd bring that down and make it two of the three panels which would be that table?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No, no, I think this in the book could be two pages.

Dave (GM):

Oh I see what you mean okay.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And then those two pages would fit on one panel because the type size would be twice the size Right, at

Dave (GM):

right okay.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah I think.

Dave (GM):

There you go folks, you're getting inside design content in this world.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

We are in the middle of, we're about 150 pages in on the layout as we record this. And there seem to be more pages than we thought, that's the big challenge.

Dave (GM):

So you get more book or less book if we cut stuff out. We may

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

cut some stuff out.

Dave (GM):

We'll see, we'll see.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Have to see.

Dave (GM):

Got all those campaign tales, you can just cut those out.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Well they're already not in the book. Oh no, the guest written.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, yeah. No, we're not gonna cut the guest written campaign tales out.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Funny joke.

Dave (GM):

Right so... It's spring. Well yeah I know yeah. There anything that you guys wish to do in and around town? Have you got any experience to spend or did you spend

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

it last time? I've got six experience. Six

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

experience sounds like...

Dave (GM):

Sounds like an advance. But do I

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

have 11 experience because I have crossed off every one of my track of 10 and drawn another circle next to

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I'm just like I've got five... Oh, six myself. Oh.

Dave (GM):

So unless you're... Hadn't been crossing it off having spent it last time, you've got 11 points to spend.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Interesting times.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Interesting times. Why have I got 11 experience?

Dave (GM):

Good question. What's wrong?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

You said you... Sorry.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Have I not rubbed it out but...

Dave (GM):

Do you think you spent it?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I don't know, I can't remember, it's so long since we last played. I

Dave (GM):

suspect if you still got it on your character sheet you probably have not spent it.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah, I normally rub them out.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. Right. And quite often at the end of a game...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

But what was I saving 11 experience for?

Dave (GM):

Seeing six is the maximum you can spend on one thing.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Right well I'll just, who cares about the rules I'll just give myself. Talents, oh oh what's how do we do talent costs in this game?

Dave (GM):

4 for a basic, 5 for an advanced.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And was I looking at 5 for advanced talent.

Dave (GM):

Oh, sorry. Six for an advanced talent.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Six for advanced. There's

Dave (GM):

a list of... There's the talents if you wanna look at them.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Now you said you're changing fast shooter because it was too powerful.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. Let... Have have a quick look in there.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yes. There was... Because I got fast

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

shooter one. The most up to date version.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Haven't got that.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I think you were saying with two gun, it's too powerful.

Dave (GM):

What, fast shooter or two gun?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

No, fast shooter, I thought you'd

Dave (GM):

say. I think we might have changed it, yeah. Alright. There might be. There's two things to do, because I think one of them...

Dave (GM):

So the fast shooter you've got, is that the one where you don't have to spend an action to prepare?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I think so.

Dave (GM):

So we changed that so the advanced levelers don't have to spend an action to prepare.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right.

Dave (GM):

But I'm not gonna penalize you for us changing the talents after. Right.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right. Okay.

Dave (GM):

So it might just mean that the second level of fast shooter doesn't do you any good.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right. So you're gonna have change

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

it. Right.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay. Because I've got well, that's it. Because I've got

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

a four

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

or three level one. That has to be level two for any good for jewels, isn't it? Is that right?

Dave (GM):

I think... Yeah. Again, I think

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

in there. Alright. Okay.

Dave (GM):

I so. I think that gives you a bonus on your draw roll.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right, yeah. No,

Dave (GM):

it'll give you a bonus on your presence roll before the draw roll. Right,

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

think I may have been going for Authority Advanced.

Dave (GM):

Okay so just remind us what that does because Andy's thinking about that as well.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So Advanced Authority gives you the opportunity in a duel to push your presence role for free.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right, what's level one do? That just gives you plus one to a dice roll isn't it?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

That gives you plus one on... Presence. Presence. Presence checks. Yeah you push your presence roll for a second time for free in addition to spending faith for a push.

Dave (GM):

It's risky because trouble still counts but yeah it could be quite powerful as well. So you've still got five points left then Matthew?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So yes, I guess, but I think about building another skill up. Skill cost five, yeah. Five. And given that I'm spending quite a lot of time doing fast talking, I'm get that up to two. Performing.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Performing two. Yeah. This one, performing five. Yeah. I'm pretty sure...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Actually, I said after the last adventure or maybe the one yeah the last adventure that I would put my performing up because

Dave (GM):

Yeah, I did love talking.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So I think I didn't spend these points and I'm now...

Dave (GM):

No, I'd be surprised if you hadn't rubbed them off having spent them. I think often at the end of the game it's like, oh I'll do the experience next time. Okay,

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I'm gonna... I've got fast shooter one, I'm gonna go fast shooter two with my 6xp. Did you want to

Dave (GM):

flip it? So fast shooter two now is you don't need to... Yeah. Fast shooter one, remind us what that does?

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Plus one to draw mod for in the duel. Right.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Alright.

Dave (GM):

So I think for you, if you want to do fast, you can take the basic as advanced if you want.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I mean I've got faster as well already.

Dave (GM):

But that gives you the advanced that we've got now.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

But if you wanted to take the basic level

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

on the current

Dave (GM):

one, then treat that as advanced.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Alright, yeah I'll do that.

Dave (GM):

I'll give you that plus one in the draw, in the duel.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Alright, okay, yeah.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Cool. Sorry,

Dave (GM):

can I

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

just have another

Dave (GM):

Anyone thinking you're buying the game, need an extra book at the table? Yeah. Buy two

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

of them. Just just if you're listening to this show thinking about buying Tales of the Old West, make sure you buy two books.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. At least. Maybe even one for you and one for each of your players. Because this last five minutes of the podcast is a demonstration of what happens when you've only got one copy of the rules.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah. Which actually we've got more than one coming but I've got bloody iPad upstairs but I should go and get it.

Dave (GM):

But that's upstairs.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

But I can't be honest.

Dave (GM):

It's upstairs. Because we were sitting down here by the fire.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yes. We are gonna need more wood.

Dave (GM):

We are gonna need more wood. Young men always need plenty of wood.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yep. Sorry. I'll go off and get some wood.

Dave (GM):

Only takes five minutes.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Oh dear, oh dear. All right shall we...

Dave (GM):

Shall

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

we? So what do you want to do? What I want to do, I feel the need to go off to some bigger town and see if I can hire a doctor for this town.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

You're worried about this cough that's going on?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No, no, no. I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna... What what are we working towards actually in... On on the town?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I thought you were gonna be getting married soon anyway.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Well, that's my plan. Until my wife dies this episode of... Or my fiance dies this episode of bloody cholera, then there's nothing for it but for me to...

Dave (GM):

Is she your fiance?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No. Don't think she should.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

No. Didn't think so. Your...

Dave (GM):

Dreams. In your young man dreams. Where

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

on this business... No. It's our outfit and business accounts. We're on a town.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

The town

Dave (GM):

should be in there. Town

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

of the Old West Spring we're looking at a timber mill. Timber mill? Alright. Well how good a timber mill when we've got bloody cholera and a citizenry meeting? Oh that'll be good.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Let's get everybody together. Yeah. What's Hands miserable.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Always being positive, aren't you?

Dave (GM):

One throwaway line at the end of the intro, which I've actually all forgotten about, is now getting you guys all panicked. Maybe I'll just have to introduce something along with my phone. Not collar, you mean? Yeah, okay, so spring is springing. The weather is turning a little bit.

Dave (GM):

It's a bit cold and a bit wet, but it's not bad, it's quite nice. The town's reasonably busy, there's a few new people in town, there seems to be some new mining interests, people prospecting up in the hills to the east.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I suppose I'm having breakfast in... Blessings. Blessings, that was it, yeah.

Dave (GM):

Not in...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

At the ranch.

Dave (GM):

Home sweet home. Your special friend, mate.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

My special friend,

Dave (GM):

Are you coming from there? I'm not really. You're going to breakfast in spite of having had a late supper at Meg's. Obviously Meg's a working girl, she's got other people to entertain.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah, of course, yeah. Thank you for pointing that. So

Dave (GM):

is this saying you just can't spend every night with her for free?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I don't spend every...

Dave (GM):

Just saying. But she does, you are certainly striking up an affectionate friendship.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Remember he gives half his service salary to the garlands to look after the orphan child.

Dave (GM):

That's true.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And the other half he gives to make for sex.

Dave (GM):

For cake, is he called it? Cake, yeah. Yeah,

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

these are polite times. He's gonna have some cake.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Well, have a song, gentlemen, so I'd like to

Dave (GM):

know this. Okay. What's going on? Yeah, so there are a couple of people in town who are a little bit poorly. Grannya is taken to her bed.

Dave (GM):

She's a bit ill, she's got a bit of a cough and a bit of a fever, but also she's still seeming quite withdrawn and sullen over what's happened in recent months because quite a lot has happened really. She's found out that her father wasn't her father, the house was broken into him and everyone was shot. There's a different

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

viewpoint to this. She thought her father was dead, now he's not. So

Dave (GM):

yeah, you know, did you wanna make a performing role to try and make her see the bright side?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Put yourself together, don't cheer up!

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So who's looking after, who else works with her in the hotel?

Dave (GM):

So the other person there is her 17 year old sister Siobhan. She's doing her best to run the place, the Sundown Saloon, but it's a bit of a struggle for her. She's in the same boat as Gronia that all this has happened. He was her father.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

McGinn is probably her father and also dead.

Dave (GM):

Torrance certainly isn't her father because Torrance was out of the scene long before she was born. So she almost certainly is McGinn's daughter. And so her father's been killed, her mother and older brother have been jailed. The younger brother's still

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

running the road.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Dutra, excellent testimony.

Dave (GM):

And the younger brother, Patrick, you remember, last time, time before, think he came to you and said, wants his share. He's continue running the ranch, he doesn't want any more bad blood between all of you, but he expected you to help him make sure he gets the McGinn claim and you wrote a letter to the surveyor Yeah, on his saying hang the slot. Saying you should honor these claims. You did get no successes on your book learning role for writing that, I remember. You rolled and failed the role.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

So we'll see what... Come on. It's a lovely day.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, please, pretty please.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So I think when I'm not ranching and you know spare time I'm spending at the hotel helping Jornada as I can.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

So you're trying to get rid Jornada in case you know Gronje.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Remember Gronje seduced me. She made the first shot.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Here we go, miss Mary.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

She did. She did.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Here we go.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I chose not to push her.

Dave (GM):

That... Yeah. And I think you... Yeah. You made a roll to resist it and failed it.

Dave (GM):

Thought Yeah. Yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And I thought, well.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Alright then.

Dave (GM):

Siobhan is struggling. She's young and she's been through a lot of she's very grateful for your help. Anything you two wanna do or be doing? Well I'm basically just trying to run the ranch.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Somebody asked you.

Dave (GM):

Actually he's off with the McGinn girls and he's off doing his sheriffing, someone's gotta run the ranch.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Yeah, so I'm just

Dave (GM):

trying trying to keep their arms going. Yeah, okay, cool.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Keeping my head down.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

You make your brother proud.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Well, you've got your mother there.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And your mother's there, and the old drunken...

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

From the...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

From... They've got a bunch of families.

Dave (GM):

The great grandfather Dean. Have we

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

got those all listed as compadres?

Dave (GM):

Your mother is but we haven't rolled her up, Yes, my

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I've got her name written down but no actual, no stats.

Dave (GM):

We should create her as a compadre actually.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I think you should have oh is grandpa totally useless? Grandpa Dean.

Dave (GM):

Yeah I think grandpa probably isn't doesn't work. I

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

was gonna say you should have grandpa Dean as your compadre given that you saved his

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

But

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

if you don't want to make him a compadre, that's fine.

Dave (GM):

You could do.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

You could do.

Dave (GM):

At the moment he's living at the run.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I'm not sure

Dave (GM):

I've printed off the rules for making up the compadres. Let me just check. I better go and get my bloody

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

open off the way.

Dave (GM):

And maybe, maybe, hold on. Here we go, I do have the rules for creating a Copadre. Alright, should we do that then?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Alright, okay.

Dave (GM):

Let's start with U Tone then. So, who are they? We know that. Yeah, my mother. Minnie Matheson, and she's your mother.

Dave (GM):

What are their attributes?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

You might need a bit of... Yeah. Don't think we've got any printed

Dave (GM):

out compadre things, but you have a bit of paper.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

How many spaces do

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

you have

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

for compadre?

Dave (GM):

Two more after this. Is there space on your character sheet for her?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I'll put it in the back. No. I

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

didn't do compadres on this table. No. Compadre, heading, that's it.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right. Oh. Oh, yes. Oh, yeah.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. Okay. So jot jot it down wherever then, Andy.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah. Put it on the

Dave (GM):

street. So I think think your mother, Tone, is she working on the ranch?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Not I think working as a working girl.

Dave (GM):

No, no, Okay, yeah, should I either be like a laborer or farm worker? This is just a laborer, it doesn't really matter. Andy, similar for you, think old grandfather Dean is probably a farm worker.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah, think so, he'd be the laraffin, because

Dave (GM):

his son was running the farm before he was killed. Okay, so the attributes, they get three in each, but roll the d6 for... And that gives a bonus to one of them.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Three in grit, quickness and cunning and roll the d6 and make one a four. Yep. Quickness, cunning and dossier T.

Dave (GM):

Rule I've in just... Only d6 needs

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

to decide which one gets

Dave (GM):

the extra point.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Roll a d6 and he'll tell you the answer.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Yeah. Okay. Five.

Dave (GM):

You get to choose. Okay.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Two.

Dave (GM):

Two. That is quick.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Right, okay. That's probably good.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

So it's a plus one, yeah.

Dave (GM):

Plus one, yeah. I'm also gonna take one off one as well, because they're both getting on a little So roll a d6 again. Five. Okay, you can choose which one loses a point. Two.

Dave (GM):

So they lose a point a quick.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Alright, okay. As you are.

Dave (GM):

Yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Enjoyable dice rolling.

Dave (GM):

But my five don't roll shit, is it?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

So just a d three for all of them, yeah?

Dave (GM):

No, no, they get three points in each.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh, right, okay. Yeah.

Dave (GM):

What's your compadres key ability? Should be the obvious ability relevant to their job. So I guess probably animal handling for grandpa Dean. Tone, I don't know what you want minis.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

No, I don't know really, maybe something like making.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, making, cool. Roll the d3 to give that ability a score between one and three. See how good they are. One, three.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Okay, he is a bit useless. Okay, you said Grandpa Dean's a bit useless. Actually he's a bit useless.

Dave (GM):

Okay, so I'm not gonna give you any talents for them, don't think, but you now need to see what their personality is. Now I need to I don't know where my reputation table is in this. Bear with me, caller. Oh, we go. So you have, or your compadre has their sort of public persona, how they come across to everyone, and then they have their internal character.

Dave (GM):

So we roll twice on the reputation table.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

It's the whole two d6.

Dave (GM):

So d66.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Right. D66.

Dave (GM):

Yep. And this is for your outward public persona.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay, I'll go red first, so that is 56.

Dave (GM):

56, honourable and courageous.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh, okay.

Dave (GM):

This is outward facing. I'm 33. 33, unimportant and irrelevant, who are you?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Obviously, you don't think it has Yeah,

Dave (GM):

is her reputation. Sorry, are

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

you again? My mother, yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

This is

Dave (GM):

her reputation in the community. Yeah. Andy, so what's their actual?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Red again, sorry. Oh, 55.

Dave (GM):

55. Neighbourly and faithful to others. Yeah, he's an honorable character. That's why

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I wouldn't blame him anyway.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, because he's honorable and he's nice. Yeah, but he's a fucking... I'm putting on. A

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

nice job, nice profusion. 51.

Dave (GM):

Lona looks after number one. But maybe that includes her kids as well though. Okay, did they have any specifics? Did abandon you. She did abandon you, yeah.

Dave (GM):

Fucking bitch. Did they

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

have any specifics? You don't know that though, do you? Or you the GM knows that, really.

Dave (GM):

She's probably been quite open about her background now because she's sort of repenting of her early life particularly now that her favourite son William was killed.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Did she say that?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

If I won't hear, put

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

the other

Dave (GM):

one! Be thinking that, but she's not saying it.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

She said, Would you prefer it if I

Dave (GM):

hurt you when you lived and I had died? Yes. Did you want to make an insight roll,

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Tony? No.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No need to make an

Dave (GM):

insight roll. Okay. Do they have any specific gear or special items? No. No.

Dave (GM):

No. Okay. And we know what their tail is. Mhmm. Okay.

Dave (GM):

That's that. That's your.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Alright. Okay. Cool.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. Okay. So you're having breakfast at the Blessings. Mhmm. Are you guys in town having breakfast with him or?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah. I'll probably pop

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

in for a little bit to have some breakfast.

Dave (GM):

Leave it in grandpa Dean's capable hands. And... No.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

That pen we said is.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Do we have other competent...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I think I'm probably not. I'm probably over at Grandma's... Sundown.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, you're having breakfast in the Blessings when you see Garland Rayburn looking a little bit agitated.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

No, not again.

Dave (GM):

Coming up and comes in and he looks, scans the bar and sees you.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I hide on the table.

Dave (GM):

He doesn't sell Haven't got an office. Take god. What is it now?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

What is it?

Dave (GM):

Says, sheriff sheriff Hawcock, I've been looking for you. I I I would have expected... Yeah. Kinda looks at his pocket watch, and I would have expected to have found you at the the the Sheriff's Office, but

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

How about you, though?

Dave (GM):

Obviously, a late a late breakfast today, sheriff.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Well, what is the time? Well I

Dave (GM):

don't know. Yeah. Probably.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Obviously, yeah. See, I'll go... I'll just take a good fumour then. Yeah.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I'm not saying that, obviously.

Dave (GM):

I

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

spent all my time getting these guys to do the right thing. One moment I'm not there. So

Dave (GM):

the news goes, you know what happened to the blessings?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

It makes

Dave (GM):

me I was gunned down, gone rapered and went, don't let you fuck up.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeehaw. Okay. You're afraid.

Dave (GM):

He says, okay. I've I've got a slightly sensitive matter to discuss with you.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

You should talk to her about that.

Dave (GM):

There's been some thefts from my Oh, okay. Equipment and other things. Frankly, I'm sick to death of whoever's taking my property. So I'm reporting this to you as the sheriff.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Sounds like a job for a sheriff.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Thank you, Will.

Dave (GM):

I would very much like me to investigate these thefts and stop it. I suspect it's the secrets. I don't have any proof of course, but they never really talk to me about what they're doing and they're always very, very secretive.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

These are the Germans.

Dave (GM):

So the kids were cousins of theirs of the family that had been coming here and you found them dead on the trail, but with a couple of the two kids missing. So those kids are now probably reunited with them.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

So I figured we should be good luck.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

We should be on good terms.

Dave (GM):

Yes, yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And also you can pay them a visit on the potential to

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

see what

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

the kids are doing and scatter them out for...

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Oh, yes. What are you doing? Is mine off here.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

This pic which says Professor Rayburn.

Dave (GM):

Oh, dear Rayburn. But yeah, so he says, I'd be grateful if you could resolve that as quickly and quietly as possible. Obviously, you don't want too much fuss, but obviously the culprits need to be Okay.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah. Shall look into it.

Dave (GM):

Excellent. Thank you. Enjoy your breakfast. Bye. Mr.

Dave (GM):

Halston, good day.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Yeah. Sorry about that.

Dave (GM):

And he scurries out. Right.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

He really is starting to

Dave (GM):

come off. You're enjoying his company, I

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

can tell Yeah, yeah. I

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

mean, to be fair, if there are, that is probably your job to look into that.

Dave (GM):

Look to it, yes, Loads of those. Yes. I'm too... I'm going to get rid your It is

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

your job, Effekt. And

Dave (GM):

he he does pay you to do that job. Yeah. Yeah.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh, at least it gets me out of the town because when the collar is striking it soon, so... Bit of fresh air up in the mountains here.

Dave (GM):

No one has died from whatever There's

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

no Little chest and chest

Dave (GM):

and going round.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Little touch of COVID.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay. So what about sort of the mines up in there?

Dave (GM):

So if you, the wide area map, the environments map, so the mines are basically in the hills So to the east, the mines are kinda up here in the Blacktop Mountain area. That's where Garlands are. The Seed Burts have got some mines a bit further south, few miles south, and as I said, there are some other mining interests that have come into town recently.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah, they're gonna be massively disappointed.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Other mining interests have come into town recently.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, some prospectors.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Other suspects.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh yeah, lot that's

Dave (GM):

of them too. They've been going into the hills to prospect for minerals and silver as well. Silver. The thing that Rayburn's mine was built around was the silver that was found in the past few years ago, a couple years ago.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

And where do the Seabirds live?

Dave (GM):

So they're gonna live in town somewhere.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

In town, they're

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

in town.

Dave (GM):

Yeah.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

That's been a small, okay. Well, I suppose I should Finish the breakfast and just ride it and... So

Dave (GM):

you've probably never been up to... No. Is

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Tony with you? Mean, Jimmy with you.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yes. Effekt. Effekt.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Yeah. Well, I'm sure grandpa Dean's got the ranch covered.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yes. Was

Dave (GM):

gonna look at the

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I'm sure he hasn't ridden the stock off or anything like that.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

We should we we roll his four dice and see what he

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

No. No. No. No.

Dave (GM):

Well, we'll see what happens on the ranch, you know, whilst you're away.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh, Julie.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

John Boy Smithson's there as well.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, and you've probably got a couple of other transient hands who are helping out.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I think I trust John Boy's boot. He's been around for ages.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

He knows what he's doing. What's his normal handling?

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

No, hasn't got any hands.

Dave (GM):

He'll be fine.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Yeah, he's got making, so he's more like

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

the handyman

Dave (GM):

rather than the

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

machinist. I'm sure we've got... There's somebody on the right shoe who knows how to...

Dave (GM):

Just somebody in the crew who knows how to steer the ship.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Crew my load. Wait, if you want me to go back I can.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

No, I'm sure it's fine. It takes a few people to run around. I'm sure we have competent people who can.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

You're only going out for a couple of hours.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, you're not going out for days. Are you going to join them Matthew?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Well they haven't been to the hotel yet, they need to come if they want me.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Well I suppose,

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I'm learning how to use the barista machine. I'll be making one, only I've got three dice in there.

Dave (GM):

You're not making the barista machine?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No, no, but I'm using a... I'm making a cappuccino.

Dave (GM):

Not sure the making skill is really about just making a coffee. I think we probably don't require you to make a roll

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

for that. Okay. Wait. Just a row because I just failed.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. It's poison. All of Granny's clientele.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah. I suppose. Yes. Go. Yeah.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Go down to the house. We've got lot fans who have joined up out into the hills.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Out into the hills? How am I gonna visit the Sigstons?

Dave (GM):

Well, for... Sigbert.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Sigbert. Oh, Sigson is... Entirely.

Dave (GM):

Their cousins, Seagsons, have got big plans for the future.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Tinkering with an automata even as we are sick.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, they make puppets.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Okay. Just because Garland said he suspects a cigarette, it doesn't necessarily mean we should.

Dave (GM):

No. They're probably not the first. No. Sort of some of

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

the new prospectors in Darwin.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

There is no yes. But suppose I shouldn't remember when we first came out there's always been a bit of

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

animosity between Yeah.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

We're get up to see what he's saying. Yeah, he's been licking garden stuff from his mine.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Know saying? I'm going to look and see how the gins

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

are doing. Nice.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah. And in fact actually let's not go in force. All fear of us. That would be...

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

That's not what it

Dave (GM):

is for

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

us is it? We're all there involved in rescuing them.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

In fact it was mostly me.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Oh god.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So yeah I'll call you.

Dave (GM):

Okay.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay. Yeah, we

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

all felt genuinely interesting actually, can go and see how the kids are.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

See how they're getting after experience, yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So down for the house first as a patient. Okay,

Dave (GM):

yeah. I'm not sure. Is is there a house listed on the map for the Seedbirds? There might be. There might not be.

Dave (GM):

If not, I'll make one up.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

No. The Seedbirds house is not So

Dave (GM):

I think the Siegberts live on the house that's just south of the livery, next to the livery on the main street, so just there. So a decent, a decent spot, sort of

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

in the middle

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

of town.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Like that house there.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. A couple of 100 feet. Not far, 150 feet maybe.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Okay, sure. Should we wave at Mr Rayburn as we go past his house? We're just gonna check out your accusations.

Dave (GM):

Your so far as yet unfounded, totally unreasonable accusations against outstanding members of this community. Yeah, till you get there, Sigbert's in, Mrs. Sigbert answers the door. Yeah, it's a very warm welcome. Gentlemen, a pleasure to see you.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Just

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

in quite

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

a bit of how the... It's their nephews, isn't it? Nephew and niece?

Dave (GM):

Cousins. I think they might, yeah, they might be nephews actually, nephew and niece. They are, as well as can be expected under the circumstances, it's probably a month since you go back.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Right.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, they are well, they're healthy. Hanno isn't really talking very much yet, but Helga is a cheerful, happy little child and she seems to have recovered from her ordeal quite well. You've been nicking stuff?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah, I

Dave (GM):

know. The subtle approach. How are they? Great, oh you've sneaky. You've

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

the kingly pick out of there.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

How's business?

Dave (GM):

I'll have to, well come in, come in, you need to speak to Anka on that school. And she invites you into yeah, a reasonably well appointed little sitting room. I mean, it's a bit scruffy and sawdusty and dusty, but they're trying. And she goes, Anchor, and he comes out from the back and joins you. He says, Ah, gentlemen, pleasure to see you all.

Dave (GM):

Have to thank you again for your sterling efforts in bringing Hanau and Helica back to us. Pleasure. It's a small victory and celebration amongst the tragedy of my dear brother and his family being killed.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Take my hat off on that point. Yeah.

Dave (GM):

Thank you, thank you.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yes we were just inquiring as to their health and well-being. Your good lady wife says that Hannah

Dave (GM):

is it? Hannah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

The lad. No, who's that one? Helga. Helga, she must be recovering well.

Dave (GM):

She is a ray of sunshine in what could be a very difficult world.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah, mean, and also, because memory serves, found out it was the outlaw gang, wasn't it?

Dave (GM):

Yeah, the Kyla gang.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

They're They're still at large, right?

Dave (GM):

So one of them was captured, Lola Kylar. So she's in prison up at Fort Craig.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

She was the one who accused Mr Chisholm's man of doing all the killing. Which I wasn't there for that by sending.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah. We've we've told you that.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yes. Yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yep. I'm not sure we've told you everything.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

That's alright. I'll to the back of the This is the back of the house.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Ah that could be weird. So of course the gang are still at large, don't turn their hands to anything. A sheriff here I say he's had some reports of

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Stealing thefts. We're gonna go back up into the hills because we wonder if you could ask the title against the virus. Have you had any problem with thefts?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No. It seems that mines are being targeted according to mister.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

I was there saying that. I just watched them and they have a lot of insight on to see if I can see any kind of reaction.

Dave (GM):

Yeah. Make a roll. He says, Rayburn has reported some thefts, I see. And that's why you've come to talk to me. I understand, I understand.

Dave (GM):

We have not suffered any thefts as far as I'm aware.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Okay, I've one success of the incident role.

Dave (GM):

Okay, he seems to be being genuine and on the level as far as you can tell with one success. No, we've not suffered any thefts, don't think. Nothing that's been reported to me. I'll go up to the mine later today and see but no, as far as I'm aware we've not suffered any problems like that lately.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

And then there are some new prospectors and the like, you're confident they're not targeting Mr. Eburn? Wouldn't be

Dave (GM):

confident of anything when it comes to the new prospectus. Have

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

you had much contact with any of the new prospectus in town?

Dave (GM):

A little. We have had one or two of them coming a little bit too closely to the mind for comfort and we've politely asked them to move along.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Just out of interest, how long have the new miners been coming in? How

Dave (GM):

long? Oh, just the last month or so. Month or so. Yeah, not long, not long.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

And are there many, how many? There just individuals coming in or is it an organisation?

Dave (GM):

There's not a big, mean there's small groups of men mostly. Maybe, there's a few individuals, a few groups of three or four people. There isn't a big operation that seems to have arrived in town. And they've been spending their time up in the hills, prospecting, looking for good seams of ore to try and Don't mine seem to have had a lot of success, at least not that they've shared with anybody.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So they've

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

never been trying to claim jumping or anything like that, have they? Any problems like that?

Dave (GM):

No, no, no, of that. Mean, there's so much land up there that's unclaimed. So no, there's no sense that they're trying to do that, no.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Where are they living? Are they living in town? Are they staying in the hotels?

Dave (GM):

So, when they're in town, they are staying in the hotels. They do spend time in the hills, you know, days. But otherwise they can be found in and around the various hostelries of Yunaga Springs.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

If they do strike, I'll get them on strike. Where are they normally going to exchange the Serbia ore in town?

Dave (GM):

That's a good question. So in first case, they would probably go down to one of the general stores, be either Sanchez or Jepsen's. They would buy gold or silver miners, but only in small quantities. Large quantities would have to be taken off, ideally up to Albuquerque for a good sale, or maybe south down to El Paso, perhaps.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay.

Dave (GM):

But Albuquerque would be more likely to get or even Santa Fe, but that's a bit further.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

So

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

it's worth pointing out I think to... Seekt. Seekt that sheriff isn't isn't just Darling Rayburn's...

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Hard muscle.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Hard He's there for everybody so if you do have trouble with anybody I mean I'm sure you've been able to deal with it yourself but if it you know it starts getting more difficult shall we say where you put yourself in moral danger feel free there is an appointed

Dave (GM):

appreciate I accept the law here. And after your good administrations with the children, I do naturally have some faith in your honor and your good intentions, even though, as I said, you are paid by Rayburn, but you're also paid by Paquito. I recognize that you're not just Rayburn's bought and sold lawman in town. It might give you a conflict of interest at some point but we'll cross that bridge when we come to.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I couldn't help but notice you looked somewhat resigned to the fact that Mr Rayburn might have suspected your involvement in his theft?

Dave (GM):

Well, my and Rayburn's relationship is a matter of public record. He's... He he never he never appreciated my arrival in town in the first place as a competitor in the hill. I've tried to keep my operations well well away from him, so, you know, it's it's it's fair dues for hard work. I'm not trying to tap into any fines that are near his mind, so I've set up several miles away from where he is.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

But

Dave (GM):

he is a man that likes to revel in his own self importance and enjoys what he thinks of his preeminence in town and having a competitor like me, because I'm hard working and I'm good at what I do, he expected me to scrape and bow on arrival, and I treated him

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

an As

Dave (GM):

and an he didn't appreciate that. So I'm not surprised in the slightest that he's casting aspersions against me and mine. He doesn't seem to have the courage to sort of challenge me with any accusations to my face but I'm used to that and that's just the way it is.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

What do you think has, you say, you know, we've seen a lot of prospectus. Are there rumors of a rich scene here that neither the two of you have discovered? What do you think has brought them in this last couple of months?

Dave (GM):

Make a performing roll. You can have a... I think you can have dice of help from the One

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

each or?

Dave (GM):

Yeah, I think you have one each.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Oh, fuck it.

Dave (GM):

Remember five has got to be trouble dice. Yeah?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Sorry? The black one's a trouble dice.

Dave (GM):

Yes. Okay. I've got one.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Notice this is the only one on a trouble dice.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Yeah. And I'm not inclined to make trouble by trying to push them.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

By accusing him of, yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Although I've got four.

Dave (GM):

Everyone's got four faiths to start with, Start the scenario with four.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

So what can faith go up to? I remember you discussing...

Dave (GM):

Notional limit of 10, but I mean we've never had it get close to 10 in any playtest. So it gets spent more quickly than it gets earned usually.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

So it cost me two faiths to

Dave (GM):

ask now. Okay, I'm gonna allow you, you two gain a bonus faith for having a breakfast together with a friend. Matthew, you can have a bonus faith first. Helping out grogna.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Right, you really want me to push this on.

Dave (GM):

No, I'm just thinking that you didn't do what you normally try and do now, is open the scenario with father's foot. Oh,

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I'm grooming my horse. I'm a go to church.

Dave (GM):

But with the opening credits of the movie, of the episode, which would allow you perhaps to garnish yourself with a point of faith.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Thank you. Okay. Thank you very much, sir.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Very considerate of you. So that

Dave (GM):

is five I forgot, what was your question again?

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Oh yeah. So my question was about, I'm not pushing

Dave (GM):

You're about not, okay. He says, well, there's a lot of the hills that haven't been properly properly prospected.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

We made a town development role that shows that I don't know.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Can I have an insight, because when you ask the question is how the Benny just sees reaction?

Dave (GM):

Yeah, okay.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah, I'll just get you I'll remember how to play this game again.

Dave (GM):

So it's your...

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

So it's five trouble,

Dave (GM):

Yeah, so for your cunning Yeah. Plus your insight level, that's gonna be six dice.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Six dice.

Dave (GM):

Five of which will have to be trouble.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yep. So it's five and a green one. Yeah. There, five trouble, the greens are not there. So

Dave (GM):

you got a success, and one on a trouble die, but that only applies if you push.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

No, I'm not gonna push in that.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

No, not really.

Dave (GM):

A slight cloud over his face when it's not mentioned, but no, you don't get any Okay. Particular sense of him hiding anything or

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Mhmm. Okay. Well, I am going be going up and do that, so I've got to, you know, since it is my duty to actually follow-up this report.

Dave (GM):

Yes, that's fine. I totally understand that you felt the need to come and talk to me about it, and I appreciate that, you didn't come in making accusations.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

No, didn't want to come around treading on people's toes.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

It is good to see the children are

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

That's good, yes. And

Dave (GM):

the children are doing well. Hannah needs more time, but Helga seems to be very much back to her cheerful young self. If I can be of any more assistance, Yeah, Sheriff, gentleman, then

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I mean, if you do get trouble, you know, don't try and solve yourself. Let me know, sort of.

Dave (GM):

I will report it to you forthwith if Yeah, I

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

I'd rather hear more than more rad reports than just from one source all the time.

Dave (GM):

I will let you know. Okay, mate. I will go up to the mine today and check with my people and see if anything's been going on.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Would it be useful if one of us came with you?

Dave (GM):

You would be welcome. I don't need your company, but if you wish to join me, you may.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Was not about hamfinging going up into the hills, have a look around all the mines, including the new miners and everything else.

Dave (GM):

Okay, yeah.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Well, you might be out there for a couple of nights then,

Dave (GM):

Well, I'm happy to, if you wish to accompany me, to ride up to my mine and then you can satisfy yourself about my operation and then you can move on to the other mines. Say Rayburns is a few miles north in the hills from where my mine is set up. But you'll be more than welcome. If you're not familiar with the hills, then No, I can obviously

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

it's a help you A math available anyway, kind of where the claims are.

Dave (GM):

You can probably find one that's hand drawn, it's quite rough. Have to ask. But there'll be some instructions about go follow this creek to this point and follow this to that point. It will require a little bit of working out and finding.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Can I

Dave (GM):

ask a

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

secret? Do you know where any of the new prospects are in town? Do know what sort of area they're looking in the hills?

Dave (GM):

So as I far can tell, they've been kind of checking the area between my and Rayburn's interests. In that few miles, there's sort of a plateau in the hills and they seem to have been in that area as far as I can tell. I haven't gone to look, none of my business. Mhmm. But that seems to be where where they were heading.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay. Yeah. So if you're going up, but later up in the hills later on to the...

Dave (GM):

Well, I shall leave immediately. As soon as I'm ready, I shall saddle my horse and go. So you'd be welcome to join me if you wish to if you wish to wish to do so.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Well, I'll have to go and ask some of a few more questions elsewhere on time. Yeah, should we sit on?

Dave (GM):

An

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

hour? An hour?

Dave (GM):

Yep. Meet me here in an hour.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Because I was gonna go down to the stores and ask.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Anybody selling any old money equipment?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

That's good. I just asked them. I just just... You know? Out of curiosity, how do you have the increase in the overall been traded?

Dave (GM):

So neither of them, the Jepsons or the Sanchezs. I think it's Sanchez. They're both over, so no. No? Had very little actually.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, not much at all.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Not much at all. And I was just wondering, do you have, with these new miners, have they given you any maps of their claims and have they been coming in?

Dave (GM):

No, they haven't given us any maps. They did buy us out of all the equipment we had, when we didn't have much, but they bought us out of pickaxes and wheelbarrows and...

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

It says diamond on the road.

Dave (GM):

Yeah, they did buy some dynamite, yep.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

They do realise. Didn't have a... Some

Dave (GM):

people are trained in using dynamite, some people aren't. But we didn't have a lot because the Sigberts and Rayburn have been here for a while and we hadn't had any new people in, so we weren't really selling much in the way of pickaxes or that kind of equipment. As you can see, it's all tack and harness and fencing equipment and hammers and things for the ranches rather than the mining. So yeah, these fellas came in and basically bought what we had and, know, were looking for more as far as I could tell.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Okay.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

It's worth going back and checking with Rayburn if there's if his equipment is marked in any identifying way that will...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Well even what equipment it is actually he's just mentioned your equipment. Is it shovels or is it...

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

There's a of name tag on?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Yeah. It's stencil and shaft, yeah.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Yes. Identified bar, which means if we find it, then can we actually identify it as is?

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

That's a good point. Yeah. Yeah.

Dave (GM):

He tells you that, yeah, so on the equipment that's his, he always has a GR burned into The shafts. The shafts of equipment and where they can. Mean, metal equipment, then they're not there's no way, particularly if they might scratch something on it. But GR is obviously his

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Brand, okay.

Dave (GM):

His brand, yeah.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

Okay. Can I give you

Dave (GM):

any more detail of exactly what has been taken? He doesn't know exactly.

Jimmy Harlesden (Tony):

He

Dave (GM):

doesn't have an inventory of...

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

What sort of thing, is it just shovels or is it...

Dave (GM):

Basic equipment, yeah. Pickaxes shovels that kind of stuff.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

Actually while we're here talking to Mr Garland,

Dave (GM):

I ask So one question

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

there've been a lot of new prospectus coming in the last couple of months. Any idea why? Is there like some rumour going round?

Dave (GM):

Make a performing roll.

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

I've suddenly thought of a thing.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

You've a

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

couple of successes anyway and three troubles. I'm not really pushing this. Two successes.

Dave (GM):

Yeah so he got one success. He looks irritated and he says, Between you and me, what I've heard is there's a guy who wants to kind of make presence in town. It's that bastard who's reported to be yeah, the the lover of the Le Guin woman, Tolerance.

Nataniel Hoarecock (Andrew):

Tolerance

Marion Freeman (Matthew):

wants to make a presence in this town. Tales of the Old West is brought to you by Effekt. Music is Old West game by Stu Venable, used with prime commission of the Angry Folk Media Envy.
